Can Kittens Lose Teeth

If your cat or kitten is chewing everything in sight including its bed your furniture and its toys it may be a sign that teething has begun.

Can kittens lose teeth. Loss of appetite during teething kittens usually have sore gums and loose or missing teeth which can cause trouble eating. If your cat is a kitten losing their teeth is a natural aspect of their physical development. They are called milk teeth and this process is similar as to what happens in we humans. Kittens begin to lose their baby teeth around 3 4 months of age to make room for the larger adult or permanent teeth.

As these teeth grow the mother may experience discomfort when nursing and start weaning the kittens. Adult teeth usually arrive at around 8 to 10 months and teeth will stop growing once a kitten reaches adulthood. Teeth can start coming in within a few weeks of birth. Long before their first birthday your growing kitten should have 30 permanent teeth.

Although the timing varies between animals as much as it does among humans the average kitten will have lost all her baby teeth by between 6 and 9 months old. Kittens lose their teeth as a normal part of their development. The kitten s baby teeth are the cat s first set of teeth which erupt around the third week. Kittens start losing their baby teeth around 9 weeks of age and from that time until their adult teeth are fully grown in at 5 to 6 months you can count on lots of chewing action.

Sometimes the kitten teeth fail to fall out and it continues to occupy space where only the adult teeth should be. If this is down to teeth erupting it will usually resolve itself. Around 4 7 months of age permanent adult teeth will start replacing the baby teeth. Kittens are born with no teeth and their first set of teeth called deciduous teeth appear at 2 weeks of age.

As their adult teeth erupt kittens may experience mild gingivitis which can lead to inflamed gums and bad breath. If your cat is chewing slower or it seems that she lost her appetite and reluctant to eat and drink it could be a sign that she is teething. By this time the majority of the permanent teeth should have erupted provided there are no complications. You may never even see the teeth as your kitten loses them as they are often lost during mealtime or through play.

However if your adult cat loses their teeth other considerations need to be made. Most cat owners won t even notice a kitten has lost his tooth it is often lost in the home or swallowed.
